This case illustrates a rare occurrence that can happen during surgery. This patient's right breast was obviously larger than her left. During her breast lift I removed 35g of tissue. All breast tissue is reviewed by a pathologist regardless of the type of surgery. Unfortunately, the tissue was found to contain a few microscopic areas of breast cancer. Her preoperative mammogram was normal. Breast cancer is found in approximately 2% of all breast reduction specimens. She has since been seen by a breast cancer surgeon. Because all other studies have been negative she will undergo a reexcision of the area and a sentinal lymph node biopsy. It is always difficult to get a diagnosis of cancer. However, it is a blessing that this cancer was found at an incredibly early stage and treatment can be initiated quickly.
