Gynecomastia - Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is a relatively common condition characterized by abnormally large, firm breast tissue on males, typically caused by hormone imbalance.

As long as the symptoms do not indicate the presence of a more serious condition, such as a tumor, gynecomastia is not considered serious.  However, it is a bothersome condition for males - most choose to ignore it or even gain weight to make it less noticeable.  In many cases, surgical removal can alleviate the embarrassment associated with enlarged male breasts, and restore a more masculine appearance to the chest.

Who can be affected by gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can affect newborns, boys going through puberty, and older men.  Use of anabolic steroids or other illegal substances can increase the likelihood of this condition.

Common symptoms of gynecomastia include the following:

  • Excess breast tissue or feminine looking breasts
  • Pain in the breast area
  • Swollen nipples
  • Nipple discharge

Some patients see improvement over time without any treatment, and others seek medication.  Surgery is a possible solution for those that aren't successful through such methods.  The ideal candidate for male breast reduction should be in good health.  Obese men are advised to lose weight before any surgical interventions are considered.

How Male Breast Reduction Corrects Symptoms of Gynecomastia

The surgical reduction of male breast tissue requires a small incision around the nipple, where the scar can be easily disguised. Excess skin, tissue, and fat is then removed through surgical techniques and liposuction.

What to Expect After Male Breast Reduction

Some semi-permanent scarring around the areola is common after surgery, but typically fades over time.  Immediately after surgery, some bruising and swelling can be expected.  A compression garment is worn to ensure proper healing.

Results can take a few months to be fully realized, but once full recovery has taken place, the chest will be more firm and more masculine.
